Firm opposition to demolition: Council officers left in no doubt
Page High residents do not want demolition—that’s the message we took to senior Haringey council officers whom we met on 15 February.
Three Page High Tenants’ Association representatives--Adrian, Julian, Larry--met Helen Fisher (Haringey’s Interim Strategic Director of Regeneration), Emma Williamson (Assistant Director of Planning) and Beth Kay (Head of Area Regeneration).
We explained that the soundings we’ve been taking on the estate make it clear that Page High is firmly against demolition and that tenants firmly oppose the parts of the Wood Green Area Action Plan affecting the estate.
The meeting was set up by Councillor Peray Ahmet, who also attended.
The council has thus far said that there are a variety of views on Page High regarding ‘regeneration.’
Far from it, there is an overwhelming majority against demolition and in favour of proper care from Sanctuary Housing.
Again and again, we’ve been hearing the same words: “We don’t see why Page High should be knocked down.”
And why should it be knocked down?
Throughout most of its 43 year-old history, Page High has been model social housing. With renewed and on-going attention from Sanctuary Housing, it could be again.
The Tenants’ Association is pressing Sanctuary Housing hard to improve security, maintenance and repairs. It’s hard work, but we’ll get there.
We’re having great success in gathering signatures for our “No to demolition, Yes to proper care from Sanctuary” petition, which we’ll present to the council at the close of the consultation period on the Wood Green Area Action Plan.
Do have a click around our website to find out more about Page High estate. Don’t be shy to get in touch if you’re curious about us and our fight to save our estate.
We’re encouraging everyone in Wood Green to write to the council during the consultation period on the Area Action Plan, which slates Page High for demolition.
Copy us in to your e-mail, please. (We're at pagehigh@btinternet.com.)
We all have until March 16, 2018 to respond to the Area Action Plan.
Let’s leave Haringey council in no doubt that social housing must be preserved and treasured!
